What Garage Door Opener Repair Covers
A garage door opener is the motorized unit that drives the door up and down — it includes the motor, logic board, drive (chain, belt, screw or direct-drive), travel and force limit settings, safety sensors, remotes, wall console and, on newer units, smart Wi-Fi connectivity. When the door stops responding, the fault is usually in one of these components rather than the door itself. Replacing the whole opener is rarely necessary; most issues are a single part such as a stripped main drive gear, a blown motor capacitor, a corroded photo-eye, or a travel-limit setting that has drifted out of range over years of use. Our technicians diagnose the exact cause on-site — checking the motor circuit, the logic board, the limit and force settings, the RF receiver and the safety-sensor wiring — and carry the common gears, boards, capacitors, sensors and remotes on every service vehicle, so the majority of opener repairs across Toronto, Mississauga and the wider GTA are completed on the first visit.
If the opener is genuinely at end of life — typically 12-15 years, a failed logic board, a worn-out motor, or a pre-sensor unit that no longer meets safety code — we supply and install a new opener from $630, programmed to your remotes, keypad and smart-home app. A typical opener replacement takes about 2-3 hours: we disconnect and remove the old motor and rail, mount the new rail and power head to the ceiling and header, attach the trolley arm to the door, run and align the safety sensors, then set the up/down travel limits and the opening/closing force so the door stops in the right place and reverses safely on contact. Finally we program your remotes, wireless keypad and (on smart models) the MyQ or equivalent app, and run several full cycles to confirm balanced, quiet operation. See our guide to a garage door opener that won't work and chain vs belt drive comparison.
Common Opener Problems We Fix
All brands serviced — 437-265-9995
Door Won't Open or Close
A motor that hums but won't move often has a failed start capacitor; no response at all can be a dead logic board, a tripped GFCI, or a stripped main drive gear. Travel-limit drift can also stop the door part-way. We test the capacitor, board and motor circuit and replace the faulty part rather than the whole unit wherever possible.
Door Reverses / Light Blinks (Sensors)
A blinking opener light and a door that reverses before closing is the classic safety-sensor symptom — misalignment, sunlight, or wiring. Realignment or replacement runs $120-$180. See our sensor troubleshooting guide.
Dead or Short-Range Remote / Keypad
If the remote only works up close or not at all, the issue is a worn antenna, a failed receiver board, or a remote that needs reprogramming. We test and restore full range on the visit.
Grinding, Humming or Noisy Motor
A humming motor that won't move usually means a stripped plastic gear; grinding points to a worn trolley or gear set. Both are routine, in-stock replacement parts. See why a motor hums.
Intermittent / Random Operation
Doors that open by themselves or work only sometimes often have a shorted wall button, a stuck remote, or RF interference from a nearby LED bulb, transformer or wireless device. We isolate the trigger, re-pair the remotes, and where needed reprogram an in-car HomeLink button to restore reliable one-touch operation.
Smart Wi-Fi / App Disconnects
Smart openers (e.g. MyQ) need a stable 2.4 GHz network. We diagnose firmware, network and gateway-board issues and restore app control. See our MyQ guide.
Opener Brands We Service & Install
We repair and replace every major garage door opener brand sold in Canada. We are an independent service company and install equipment from multiple manufacturers — we recommend the right unit for your door, headroom and budget rather than a single brand. New openers start at $630 supplied, installed and programmed; premium smart belt-drive models cost more. Just as important as the brand is the drive type. Chain-drive openers are the most affordable and durable workhorse, but they are the noisiest — fine for a detached garage. Belt-drive units run a reinforced rubber belt over the same sprocket and are dramatically quieter, which is why most homeowners with living space above or beside the garage upgrade to belt. Direct-drive (and wall-mount jackshaft) designs put the motor on the trolley or beside the door, eliminating the rail for the quietest, lowest-maintenance operation. If your current opener is a loud, aging chain unit, upgrading to a belt or direct-drive model is usually the most noticeable improvement you can make. We will explain the trade-offs and quote the best fit for your home on-site. We also service commercial and heavy-duty operators for businesses across the GTA — including wall-mount jackshaft units ideal for low-headroom garages and warehouses, and high-cycle commercial operators built for the constant use of loading docks, shops and fleet bays. Whether it is a residential unit or a commercial overhead-door operator, we diagnose the motor, control board, limit switches and safety devices and get the door cycling reliably again.

Frequently Asked Questions — Opener Repair
Answers from Michael Thompson, IDEA Certified — 15+ Years Experience
How much does garage door opener repair cost in the GTA?
+The service call is FREE when you proceed with a repair; a $120 diagnostic applies only if you choose not to proceed. Most opener repairs — gear, board, sensor or remote — are completed on the first visit. A brand-new opener supplied, installed and programmed starts at $630, with premium smart belt-drive models costing more. Call 437-265-9995.
Should I repair or replace my garage door opener?
+If the motor and main board are healthy, repairing a gear, capacitor, sensor, remote or travel-limit setting is usually the better value. If the unit is 12–15+ years old, lacks safety sensors (pre-1993), or has a failed logic board or worn-out motor, replacement from $630 is more cost-effective and adds smart-home features plus a fresh 1-year warranty. A new opener typically takes about 2-3 hours to install: we remove the old motor and rail, mount the new rail and power head, attach the trolley arm, align the safety sensors, set the up/down travel and force limits, and program your remotes, keypad and (on smart models) the app. It is also a good moment to move from a noisy chain-drive to a quieter belt or direct-drive unit. Our technician gives an honest on-site assessment at no charge.
Do you repair all garage door opener brands?
+Yes. We service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Linear, Skylink and other major brands across the GTA, on every drive type — chain, belt, screw and direct-drive. We also service commercial and heavy-duty operators, including wall-mount jackshaft units for low-headroom garages and high-cycle units for loading docks and shops. We carry common gears, boards, capacitors, sensors and remotes on every truck so most repairs are completed same-day.
Why won't my garage door close — it reverses or the light blinks?
+This is almost always a safety-sensor (photo-eye) problem: misalignment, sunlight interference, a knocked bracket, or a wiring fault triggers a false obstruction. Sensor realignment or replacement is $120–$180 and is handled in the same visit. Less commonly, the door reverses because the closing-force setting is too sensitive or the down travel limit is set so the door hits the floor and bounces back — we recalibrate the force and travel limits so the door seats fully and reverses only on a genuine obstruction.
Do you offer same-day opener repair?
+Yes, same-day service is available across Toronto and the GTA, including weekends and holidays at no extra charge. Typical response time is 30–60 minutes. Call 437-265-9995.
