Garage Door Safety Sensors: Technology, Alignment, and Mississauga Code Requirements

Photoelectric safety sensors became mandatory on all new garage door openers sold in North America in 1993, following UL325 safety standards. These small devices prevent the door from closing on a person, pet, or object in the opening — yet they are among the most frequently misunderstood and improperly installed components in garage door systems. In Mississauga, where humid continental with lake-effect snow from Lake Ontario, sensor performance can be affected by direct sunlight interference, temperature extremes, and frost on the lens. Mississauga's newer subdivisions (built after 2000) often feature double-car garages with smart opener systems.

How Photoelectric Sensors Work

Each sensor pair consists of a sending unit (emitter) and a receiving unit (detector) mounted on the inside face of the vertical tracks, typically 4–6 inches above the floor. The emitter sends a continuous infrared beam across the door opening. As long as the receiver detects the beam, the door can close. When the beam is broken — by a person, pet, bicycle, or any obstruction — the door reverses immediately during closing and will not begin a closing cycle until the beam is restored. The receiving sensor glows solid green when aligned; the sending sensor glows solid amber when powered.

Common Sensor Problems in Mississauga Homes

• Misalignment — The most frequent cause of sensor failure. A bump from a vehicle, lawn mower, or child can shift a sensor bracket enough to break the beam. Symptoms: door won't close, or the opener light flashes a specific number of times indicating sensor fault. Realignment takes under 10 minutes.
