Garage door cable repair in Toronto & the GTA — who to call
Royal Garage Doors repairs and replaces garage door cables across Toronto, Etobicoke, North York and the GTA. Our IDEA Certified technicians — led by Michael Thompson — fix frayed, snapped and off-drum lift cables safely, re-seat and re-tension the drums, and inspect the springs and balance so the problem does not return. Cable repair runs $180–$260 + tax (with new bottom brackets, $260), and the service call is FREE with any repair; a $120 diagnostic applies only if you choose not to proceed. Safety warning: garage door cables work under extreme spring tension and the bottom brackets store dangerous energy — this is not a safe DIY job. Keep the door closed and call a professional. 1-year warranty, emergency same-day service, no weekend surcharge. Call 437-265-9995.
Safety first: Garage door lift cables are tensioned by the torsion or extension springs and connect to bottom brackets that hold dangerous stored energy — even when the door is fully closed. A snapped or off-drum cable can let the door fall or come off the track. Do NOT attempt a DIY cable repair or operate the opener. Disconnect the opener with the manual release, keep the door down, and call a trained technician. DIY cable and spring work is a leading cause of serious hand and finger injuries.
What Garage Door Cables Do
Garage door lift cables are the steel cables that run down each side of the door, from a grooved drum at the top to the bottom bracket at the foot of the door. Working together with the torsion or extension springs, they carry the full weight of the door as it raises and lowers — keeping it balanced, level and under control. Because they are constantly flexing under heavy tension, cables are a normal wear item: over years of cycling they fray strand by strand, rust where moisture collects near the floor, or jump out of the drum groove when something else in the system fails. When a cable frays, snaps or comes off the drum, the door immediately becomes unbalanced — it may hang crooked, jam in the track, refuse to open, or in the worst case come off the track and fall. That is why a cable problem should be treated as urgent and never run on the opener. Our technicians replace both cables as a pair (so the door stays evenly tensioned), re-seat and re-tension the drums, check the bottom brackets, and test the spring balance before they leave. Learn more in our guide to a cable that came off the drum and drum replacement guide.
Cable failures rarely happen in isolation. The most common trigger is a broken spring: when a torsion spring snaps, the sudden shock load can fray or break the cable in the same instant — which is why we always inspect the springs whenever we service cables. Age and rust are the next most common causes, followed by a door that is out of balance so one cable carries more than its share of the load, and improper past installation with the wrong drum or tension. Whatever the cause, fixing only the cable without checking the springs, drums and balance often means a repeat failure within weeks. Our full-system inspection is included in the cable repair price. If your spring is the real culprit, see our spring repair service — a single torsion spring is $280, and a related broken cable repair page covers the symptoms in detail.
Cable Problems We Fix
Emergency same-day — 437-265-9995
Frayed Cable
A cable with broken strands and a "fuzzy" look is about to snap. We replace both cables before failure and check the drums and springs that caused the wear.
Snapped / Broken Cable
When a cable breaks the door hangs crooked and can jam or fall. Do not run the opener — call for emergency service. See our broken cable page.
Cable Off the Drum
A cable that jumped out of the drum groove leaves the door uneven and off balance. We re-seat the cable, re-tension and align the drum, and find the underlying cause.
Loose / Slack Cable
Slack cable hanging off the drum usually means a balance or spring problem. We diagnose the root cause rather than just re-spooling the cable.
Rusted Cable & Bottom Brackets
Cables corrode near the floor where moisture sits. We replace rusted cables and, where needed, the bottom brackets they anchor to ($260 with brackets).
Door Off-Track from Cable Failure
A failed cable can pull the door off its tracks. We safely re-rail the door, replace the cables and inspect rollers, track and springs.

Frequently Asked Questions — Cable Repair
Answers from Michael Thompson, IDEA Certified — 15+ Years Experience
How much does garage door cable repair cost in the GTA?
+Garage door cable repair runs $180–$260 + tax, which covers replacing both lift cables, realigning the drums and a full system inspection. If the bottom brackets also need replacing the price is $260. The service call is FREE when you proceed with the repair; a $120 diagnostic applies only if you choose not to proceed. Most cable repairs are completed same-day on the first visit. Call 437-265-9995.
Is it safe to fix a broken garage door cable myself?
+No. Garage door lift cables work under extreme tension alongside the torsion or extension springs, and the bottom brackets they attach to can hold dangerous stored energy even when the door is down. Attempting a DIY cable repair is a leading cause of serious hand and finger injuries. Always have a trained technician release tension safely and replace the cables. Keep the door closed and do not operate the opener until a professional has inspected it. Standards for these systems are set by DASMA.
Why did my garage door cable snap or come off the drum?
+Cables fail from years of rust and fraying, from a snapped spring suddenly shock-loading the cable, or from a door that is out of balance so one side carries too much weight. A cable can also jump off the drum if the door is forced when off-track, if the drum set screws loosen, or if the cable was installed with the wrong tension. We replace the cables, re-seat and re-tension the drums, and check the springs and balance so it does not happen again.
Can I use my garage door with a broken cable?
+No — do not operate the door. A broken or off-drum cable lets the door hang unevenly, which can cause it to come off the track, jam, or fall. Running the opener can also further damage the drums, springs and panels. Disconnect the opener with the manual release, leave the door closed, and call for service. We offer emergency same-day cable repair across the GTA.
Do cables and springs need to be replaced together?
+Not always, but they are often related. If a spring broke, the sudden load frequently frays or snaps the cable, so both should be inspected. If the cables failed from age and rust, the springs are usually the same age and may be near the end of their cycle life. Our technician checks both during the same visit and gives you an honest recommendation — a single torsion spring is $280 if replacement is needed. See our spring repair page.
Do you offer emergency same-day cable repair?
+Yes, emergency same-day garage door cable repair is available across Toronto, Etobicoke and the GTA, including weekends and holidays at no extra charge. Typical response time is 30–60 minutes. Call 437-265-9995.
