Insulated Garage Doors — Toronto & GTA
Polyurethane Core | High R-Value | Warmer, Quieter Garage | Supply + Install from $1,350
Insulated garage doors in Toronto & the GTA — what you need to know
Royal Garage Doors supplies and installs insulated garage doors across Toronto, Etobicoke, North York and the wider GTA. For our cold Ontario winters we recommend a polyurethane-core door in the R-12 to R-18 range — the injected foam bonds the steel skins together for a higher R-value, a warmer and quieter garage, and lower heating bills than a single-layer or polystyrene door. Supplied and installed from $1,350 + tax for a standard 8×7 single (16×7 insulated double about $2,300), including the door, all hardware, weatherstripping, old-door removal and a safety check. The opener is sold separately from $630. Warranties: 1-year labour, 5-year hardware, lifetime panel. The service call is FREE with any installation; a $120 diagnostic applies only if you choose not to proceed. Led by IDEA Certified technician Michael Thompson. Call 437-265-9995.
Why an Insulated Garage Door Matters in Ontario
Your garage door is the single largest opening in your home — often 16 feet wide and 7 feet tall — and in a GTA winter it is also the weakest point for heat loss. A non-insulated single-layer steel door is essentially a thin metal sheet between your heated home and -20°C air. An insulated door replaces that sheet with a three-layer sandwich: an exterior steel skin, a solid foam core, and an interior steel skin, bonded into one rigid panel. That core slows conductive heat transfer, blocks drafts, and keeps an attached or heated garage dramatically warmer — typically 5 to 12°C warmer than the outdoor temperature without any added heat. For homes with a bedroom, bonus room or living space above the garage, that warmer buffer directly reduces how hard your furnace works on the shared wall and floor. Natural Resources Canada highlights that controlling heat loss and air leakage at large openings is a key part of a home's overall energy performance — see their home energy efficiency resources for the bigger picture.
Beyond comfort and energy, an insulated door protects what is inside. It helps keep water pipes that run through the garage from freezing, keeps your vehicle's battery and fluids closer to working temperature, and stops paint, finishes and stored goods from going through harsh freeze-thaw cycles. The bonded core also makes the door far more rigid and dent-resistant than a hollow door, and it noticeably dampens noise — both the rattle of the door itself and outside traffic and weather. If you work in the garage, run a home gym, or have a finished room above it, insulation is the upgrade you notice every single day. Understanding R-Value, U-Factor & Insulation Type
The numbers that actually matter — 437-265-9995
What R-Value Means
R-value measures resistance to heat flow — higher is better. A single-layer steel door is roughly R-0 to R-3; a quality polyurethane door reaches R-12 to R-18. For an attached GTA garage we recommend R-12 or higher. Learn the full distinction in our R-value vs U-factor guide.
Polyurethane Core (Best)
Injected liquid foam expands to fill every cavity and bonds the steel skins into one rigid panel. Highest R-value per inch, quietest, most dent-resistant. The right choice for cold winters and attached garages.
Polystyrene Core (Budget)
A cut foam board slid into the panel. Lighter and cheaper, but lower R-value and not bonded, so it is less rigid and quieter only than a hollow door. Fine for a detached, unheated garage on a budget.
Single-Layer (No Insulation)
One steel skin, no core. The cheapest door and the worst for energy — it transfers cold straight through. We only recommend it for a cold, detached storage garage where temperature truly does not matter.
Weather Seals Matter Too
Even the best door leaks if the seals fail. We fit a fresh bottom seal, side and top weatherstripping and a threshold where needed so the R-value isn't undone by drafts. See panel replacement if only sections are damaged.
Energy Savings in Practice
The real payback comes on attached or heated garages and homes with rooms above. Read the breakdown in our insulated door energy savings post and best doors for cold climates.
Styles, Brands & What We Install
Insulation is a construction choice, not a look — so almost any style can be insulated. We supply and install insulated doors in traditional raised-panel, carriage-house, modern flush and full-view glass designs, in steel, aluminum and faux-wood finishes, from multiple manufacturers including Clopay and other leading brands. As an independent installer we recommend the right door for your home, climate and budget rather than pushing a single manufacturer. Browse the full range of looks in our garage door styles & types buyer's guide, then pair your chosen style with a polyurethane core for the warmth and quiet you want. Whether you are replacing a tired old door or building new, we will measure, quote on-site, and handle the complete installation.

Frequently Asked Questions — Insulated Garage Doors
Answers from Michael Thompson, IDEA Certified — 15+ Years Experience
What R-value do I need for an insulated garage door in Toronto?
+For the GTA's cold winters we recommend a polyurethane-core door in the R-12 to R-18 range for an attached garage, and R-9 or higher for a detached garage you heat. Polyurethane-foam doors reach a far higher R-value than the same-thickness polystyrene door because the foam is injected and bonds the steel skins together, eliminating air gaps and thermal bridging.
How much does an insulated garage door cost installed?
+An insulated garage door supplied and installed starts at $1,350 + tax for a standard 8×7 single, including the door, all hardware, weatherstripping, professional installation, old-door removal and a safety check. A 16×7 insulated double is about $2,300. The opener is not included and starts at $630. The service call is FREE with any installation; a $120 diagnostic applies only if you choose not to proceed. Call 437-265-9995.
Will an insulated garage door actually save me money?
+If your garage is attached or heated, yes. An insulated door slows heat loss through the largest opening in your home, keeps the garage 5-12°C warmer in winter, reduces the load on the wall shared with your house, and helps protect pipes, cars and stored items from freezing. The biggest savings come on attached garages below living space or a bonus room. Natural Resources Canada notes that reducing air leakage and heat loss at large openings is a meaningful part of a home's energy performance.
Polyurethane vs polystyrene — which insulation is better?
+Polyurethane is better for the GTA. It is injected as a liquid that expands to fill every cavity and bonds the inner and outer steel skins into one rigid panel, giving a higher R-value, a quieter and more rigid door, and better dent resistance. Polystyrene is a cut foam board slid into the panel — cheaper, lighter, and lower R-value, fine for a milder climate or a detached unheated garage on a budget.
Does an insulated door make the garage quieter?
+Yes. The bonded polyurethane core dampens vibration and the three-layer steel-foam-steel construction is far more rigid, so the door rattles less, transmits less road and weather noise, and runs noticeably quieter — especially paired with a belt-drive opener and nylon rollers.
Can I add insulation to my existing garage door instead?
+You can add a retrofit foam-board kit to a single-layer steel door, but it adds weight that can unbalance the springs and never matches a factory-bonded polyurethane door for R-value, rigidity or appearance. If your door is old, dented or already failing, a new insulated door from $1,350 is usually the better long-term value than insulating a worn single-layer door.
